Rise Above the Negativity Through Meditation

Rothko Chapel’s ‘12 Moments’ series continues with Buddhist meditation, Wednesday, May 3

HOUSTON – April 17, 2017 – Negativity can be difficult to erase from our daily thoughts. The Rothko Chapel will present a guided meditation in the Buddhist tradition, which will demonstrate how to redirect the mind in a more peaceful and productive direction.

The local nonprofit will be hosting Buddhist meditation guided by Myokei Caine-Barrett, Shonin, at noon on Wednesday, May 3. The Chapel is located at 3900 Yupon. The suggested donation to attend is $10.

Buddhist meditation develops mindfulness, concentration, tranquility and insight -- in the hope of discovering enlightenment by stripping away hate, anger and other negative feelings and attitudes.

The current bishop of the Nichiren Order of North America (NONA), Caine-Barrett is the first Western woman in the world and first person of African-Japanese descent to be ordained in the Nichiren Shu tradition.

Caine-Barrett is also the first female bishop in the Nichiren Order of North America. She is resident priest and guiding teacher of the Nichiren Buddhist Sangha of Texas and Myoken-ji Temple, where part of her work is helping inmates and veterans.

The event is a continuation of Rothko Chapel’s educational meditation series, “12Moments: Experiencing Spiritual and Faith Traditions.”

Rothko Chapel’s director of public programs and community engagement Ashley Clemmer said the series is designed to introduce and offer unique insight into diversity of the world’s faith traditions.

“The 12 Moments series pairs the Rothko Chapel’s commitments to spirituality and diversity,” she said. “At noon on the first Wednesday of every month we have a teacher from a different faith tradition who guides the community in meditation. Myokei Caine-Barrett is a pioneer in Buddhism – and I think everyone can benefit from her wisdom and presence.”

The "Twelve Moments" series is co-sponsored by Ligmincha Texas Institute, The Jung Center of Houston, M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, and the Rothko Chapel.
