Rothko Chapel releases calendar for Twelve Moments through July 2018
HOUSTON – August 11, 2017 – Learn something new and find peace of mind all year long at the Rothko Chapel.
At noon, on the first Wednesday of every month, the Rothko Chapel hosts Twelve Moments: Experiencing Spiritual and Faith Traditions.
The meditative educational program provides attendees with new practices for mediation and contemplation, while also offering unique insight into various faith traditions.
Each month, the teacher leading the program comes from a different faith background – giving frequent visitors a vantage point to view the diverse spectrum of faiths and religions in Houston.
Since its inception in 2005, the Chapel has used the program to celebrate this diversity, while also helping build bridges of awareness, understanding and acceptance through offerings that are both educational and experiential.
“The series pairs the Rothko Chapel’s commitments to spirituality and diversity,” public programs and community engagement director Ashley Clemmer said. “Often religion and spirituality can feel mysterious and inaccessible when they are not our own. We want to what may appear as ‘other’ and make it familiar. People are often surprised the similarities they discover compared to their own spiritual belief systems and practices.”
The Chapel is located at 3900 Yupon in downtown Houston. The programs are free and open to the public, with a suggested contribution of $10.
The planned faith traditions for each month include:
· Sep. 6 – Jewish
· Oct. 4 – Baha’i
· Nov. 1 – Hindu
· Dec. 6 – Christian
· Jan. 1 – Modern
· Feb. 7 – Confucianism
· March 7 – Zoroastrian
· April 4 – Buddhist
· May 2 – Islamic
· June 6 – Sikh
· July 4 – Mindfulness for Parents and Children
Presenters will be visiting from a number of Houston communities, including Congregation Emanu El, Bahá'í Community of Houston, Episcopal Diocese of Texas and Dawn Mountain.
