Texas Light: The Art and Architecture of the Rothko Chapel

Houston, TX -- Rothko Chapel and the University of Houston Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture and Design present an evening program which will examine the role of light within the Rothko Chapel, TEXAS LIGHT: The Art and Architecture of the Rothko Chapel.  Presenters will demonstrate how light can create intentional experiences.  The history of the Chapel’s architectural design will be a discussion topic with special focus on the skylight from conception to post-renovation.  The presenters include George Sexton of George Sexton Associates and Stephen Cassell of Architecture Research Office (ARO) who are currently participating in the renovations of the Rothko Chapel, with Christopher Rothko, Ph.D., son of Mark Rothko and chair of the Rothko Chapel’s Opening Spaces campaign.  The conversation will be moderated by Sandra Zalman, Associate Professor of Art History, University of Houston. The program is free and open to the public and will be held on Monday, April 8, at 6 p.m. at the University of Houston Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture and Design, 4200 Elgin St., Houston, 77204 on the University of Houston campus.       

About Rothko Chapel

The Rothko Chapel is closed through the end of 2019 for major renovations.  As part of its Opening Spaces campaign, the first phase of the project will realize a Welcome House and a new energy center; enhancements to the lighting and entryway in the Chapel; and new greenspaces for reflection will be added to the existing grounds. Programs will be held off-site and can be found online at http://www.rothkochapel.org/experience/events/.  As an independent non-profit, non-governmental organization, the Chapel depends on contributions from foundations and individuals to support its mission of creating a space for contemplation and dialogue on important issues.
