Acclaimed Freedom Singer Celebrates
the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at the Rothko Chapel
Rutha Mae Harris performs songs from Civil Rights movement
HOUSTON (Jan. 15, 2015) Experience the joyful, soulful sounds of renowned Freedom Singer, Rutha Mae Harris, as the Rothko Chapel continues its tradition of honoring the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on his birthday, Thursday, January 15, 2015 with Songs of Freedom.
Harris will perform rousing renditions of freedom songs, as she recalls the roles each song played in one of the most successful nonviolent movements in history.
A founding member of the Freedom Singers, Harris was arrested three times during her work as a civil rights activist, spending 14 days in jail. Numerous civil rights leaders considered her voice invaluable to the success of the movement.
The Freedom Singers formed in 1962. The group toured across the country singing at universities, churches, marches and demonstrations, singing to help educate about the civil rights cause. Performing at the March on Washington to a crowd of more than 350,000, the Freedom Singers became known for “We Shall Overcome,” a protest song that became the anthem of the civil rights movement.
