ROTHKO CHAPEL PRESENTS TWELVE MOMENTS

Sharing Hurricane Harvey stories is the focus of the September 5 practice

Houston, TX – Rothko Chapel continues its highly popular series Twelve Moments: Experiencing Spiritual and Faith Traditions offering participants an hour-long contemplative practice on the first Wednesday of each month inside the Chapel. Members of Houston’s diverse faith community have been invited to lead a practice on a specific topic using their faith tradition as a vehicle for reflection.  This season, the noon time practice is focused on topics such as resilience, justice, renewal, and stewardship, among others.  The Rothko Chapel is located at 1409 Sul Ross at Yupon, Houston, 77006.    

Twelve Moments

The series begins at the Chapel on September 5 at noon with a focus on “Resilience”.  One year after Hurricane Harvey, participants will be led in a meditation by Dr. Alejandro Chaoul of Mind Body Spirit Institute at the Jung Center, followed by Marcela Brave and Leslie Gauna of Houston Playback Theatre will lead participants in reflective story telling. September 5, 12:00 p.m.

October will explore “Difference” with a meditation in the Jewish tradition led by Rabbi Dan Gordon of Temple Beth Torah of Humble, Texas.  October 3, 12:00 p.m.

“Forgiveness” is the topic for November with a meditation in the Islamic tradition led by Iman Dr. Wazir Ali of Masjid Warthud-Deen Mohammed and Masjid Al’Qur’an. November 7, 12:00 p.m.

In December, be present for a contemplative practice on “Justice” in the Christian tradition led by Rev. Francene Young of St. Luke the Evangelist Episcopal Church. December 5, 12:00 p.m.

Begin the New Year with a sense of “Renewal” with a crystal bowl meditation led by Dana Shamas of Bayou Bliss Yoga. January 1, 12:00 p.m.

Welcome February with a meditation on the environment in the Zen Buddhist tradition led by Mary Carol Edwards from Houston Zen Center on “Stewardship.” February 6, 12:00 p.m.

The Twelve Moments series is a pay-what-you-can event with a suggested contribution of $10.00.  

Living Mindfully

In addition to the Twelve Minutes series, the Chapel offers two distinct moving meditations, tai chi and yoga, outdoor on the Chapel plaza during the months of October and November.

Tai chi, a mind/body/breath practice is performed by the reflecting pool every Thursday in October and November, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. led by Henderson Smith of Living Well Therapies. Dress in comfortable clothes and shoes for this powerful movement.

Yoga led by various instructors from Bayou Bliss Yoga is performed on the Chapel plaza every Saturday in October and November from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Dress in comfortable clothes and bring a yoga mat to fully enjoy this outdoor experience.

Both tai chi and yoga are a pay-what-you-can experience with a suggested contribution of $15.00 per class.
