Rothko Chapel has launched a restoration fund to address the significant damage caused by Hurricane Beryl

Following the derecho storm that tore through Houston in May, Hurricane Beryl hit the city in late July with intense winds and heavy rains causing immense damage, prolonged power outages, and the loss of life.

In contrast to the severe weather events of previous years where the Chapel remarkably and thankfully sustained no damage, including past freezes, floods, and last year's drought, the same cannot be said about Hurricane Beryl’s impact. The storm’s exceptionally heavy rain and gale-force winds caused a roof leakage that resulted in damage to parts of the ceiling, several walls, and four of Mark Rothko's iconic panels. A majestic old oak tree also split in half and fell on the roof of our office causing water damage to our workspace. While we are deeply grateful that there were no injuries, the impact to the murals is overwhelming and the Chapel remains closed to the public indefinitely for restoration and repairs.

To ensure that the Chapel can reopen its doors as soon as possible and continue to serve as a space for contemplation and action, we are asking for your generous support. The Chapel has engaged Whitten & Proctor Fine Art Conservation, one of the nation’s leading art-conservation firms, to spearhead the conservation efforts in consultation with other leading conservators. We estimate that $200,000 will be needed to cover costs related to the restoration of the artwork, as well as repairs of the buildings and the grounds, not covered by insurance.

Your donation, no matter the size, will directly contribute to the restoration of this transformational sacred space and the protection of the irreplaceable artworks within it. By donating, you are helping to ensure that we can reopen as soon as possible so all can continue to experience the profound impact of the Rothko Chapel. Please consider contributing to the Restoration Fund today and be a part of the Chapel’s community of support. Your support is crucial in preserving this cultural and spiritual landmark.
