Civil rights lawyer, advocate, legal scholar and author of The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness—the bestselling book that helped to transform the national debate on racial and criminal justice in the United States—Michelle Alexander shares reflections on the state of US civil rights in conversation with local Houston community leader Larry Payne, Producer & Host of Dialogue Houston, HCC-TV. Their conversation will explore the current state of civil rights in this country and the challenges we face in furthering civil rights and liberties into the future. Houston Youth Poet Laureate Avalon Hogans will share an original poem to open this session.
