We gathered for a magical and moving evening as the legendary Bread and Puppet Theater brought its iconic, politically charged, and joyfully irreverent circus performance to the Rothko Chapel grounds. Hailing from Vermont and now in its 62nd year, Bread and Puppet was celebrated for its giant papier-mâché puppets, raucous brass band music, and radical theater rooted in social justice, art, and community.
That summer, the show was reimagined with new themes reflecting the moment, blending satire, spectacle, and timeless folk wisdom. It was an experience for all ages – playful, provocative, and deeply human. After the performance, audiences joined in Bread and Puppet’s tradition of sharing homemade sourdough rye bread with aioli, offered in the spirit of communal nourishment and celebration.
The evening also featured a pop-up of Bread and Puppet’s famed “Cheap Art” stand, offering affordable books, posters, pamphlets, postcards, and banners from the Bread and Puppet Press – all handmade and deeply rooted in the belief that art is as essential as bread.
