Each year in honor of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the Rothko Chapel presents a full day of reflection on the prophetic voice and spirit of Dr. King, who embodies the Chapel’s mission to unite creativity, faith and justice.
Throughout the day, iconic speeches delivered by Dr. King throughout his life will resonate within the Chapel, each followed by a live musical response from renowned Houston artists and ensembles. Together, these powerful words and sounds invite visitors to reflect on Dr. King's enduring vision of justice, equality, and peace within this contemplative, sacred space.
About the Annual MLK Observance
In 1979, The Rothko Chapel started the annual MLK Observance to connect Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy to the ongoing struggle for civil and human rights, captured through artist Barnett Newman’s Broken Obelisk (1968). This iconic sculpture, located on the plaza adjacent to the Chapel, is dedicated to Dr. King in honor of his work, and as a reminder to continue organizing for the beloved community today.
