ROTHKO CHAPEL HOSTS SILKROAD ENSEMBLE ON INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE

Houston, TX – The Rothko Chapel will observe the International Day of Peace (Peace Day) with a performance by the Grammy-Award winning artists of Silkroad Ensemble on Friday, September 21, at 7:00 p.m. at the Chapel.  The International Day of Peace was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1982.  It annually offers a shared date for people and communities throughout the world to commit to peace above all differences and to contribute to building a culture of peace.  The 2018 theme for Peace Day is “The Right to Peace – The Universal Declaration of Human Rights at 70.” Silkroad, founded by internationally renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma, is comprised of musicians that represent dozens of nationalities and artistic traditions.  They create music that embraces difference to create a more hopeful world.

Silkroad Ensemble is currently engaged in a three-year residency at the Moody Center for the Arts, Rice University.  "The Moody is delighted to host the Silk Road Ensemble during their residency at Rice,” said Alison Weaver, Suzanne Deal Booth Executive Director of the Moody Center for the Arts. “Their mission of sparking radical cultural collaboration and passion-driven learning to build a more hopeful world is consistent with much of what we hope to achieve on campus and together with the broader Houston community."

“Silkroad is a beautiful example of how musicians and artists from all over the globe can use creativity to bridge divides and create a movement for peace,” added David Leslie, Executive Director of the Rothko Chapel.

The Silkroad Ensemble performance for the International Day of Peace is a pay-what-you-can program with a suggested contribution of $20.00 per person.  Guests can enjoy a reception on the Chapel plaza post performance.  Rothko Chapel is located in the heart of the Montrose at 3900 Yupon at Sul Ross Street, Houston, TX 77006.
